Welcome to the Will Thomas cabin, where history abounds. This cabin bears the name of the only white Cherokee Chief to ever live, and the cabin basement is original to the time of Will Thomas. Will Thomas birth 1805 – Death 1893
If you wish to prepare for your visit, read “Thirteen Moons” by Charles Frazier. Although Frazier reputes any historic similarity to the main character, you will quickly surmise the main character, Will Cooper, is based on the life of William Holland Thomas.
Without delving deeply into the life of Will Thomas, it is sufficient to say Will Thomas was the adopted son of Drowning Bear (a Cherokee Chief), and Thomas became a champion for the Cherokee through his colorful life. Thomas had trading posts throughout the area, was a congressperson to Washington, DC, led a legion of Cherokees who fought during Civil War, and was directly responsible for establishing the Qualla Boundary, the reservation, hence maintaining a home for all Cherokees who were able to remain in the area during the removal of most Cherokees in the 1800’s to Oklahoma.
This farm, the Will Thomas Farm, abounds with history, and even has a legend. During the removal, the Cherokee were paid for their land in gold, and were unable to bank their money since they were not American citizens, so they entrusted their money to Will Thomas. Sadly, Thomas became mentally ill, and the legend has it that Thomas buried the gold on the farm!
Yes, the floors are crooked in the cabin, but I say it’s history seeping through, so enjoy and ponder history at the Will Thomas cabin.
Thomas Valley is known as one of the best bike routes in Western North Carolina. Take off right from the cabin.

Before you pack up the car and head for the mountains, know that when we say mountains, we really mean it!
Downtown Bryson City has an elevation of 1,752 feet, so think of this as a starting point. The majority of our cabins will have a higher elevation than this. This means that our roads- both state and private- will be steeper, narrower, and curvier than you may be use to driving. Also, you should expect to encounter gravel roads. Consider it part of our rural mountain charm!
Here at Yellow Rose, your safety is our priority. If a cabin requires 4 wheel, front wheel, or all wheel drive to access it, it will be listed in the description. If bringing or riding motorcycles, please call and ask for motorcycle friendly properties. If you have any concerns about accessing your rental, please call prior to your arrival and we will be happy to discuss it with you.
